Newspaper
Have students compose a town newsletter alerting everyone to what residents are up to. It is up to the students to decide what articles the paper should include and which characters should write them.
Collage
Have students break up into groups and create collages using magazines, newspapers, and any other materials to depict the lives of Hurston's characters.
Shout Out
Collect significant terms from the story such as spunk, razor, saw, etc. Tell the class you are going to shout out a word, and they are to respond with the first concepts or ideas that come to their minds.
Poetry
Write a short (1-2 paragraph) love poem from Spunk to Lena. The poem can be in any style, just make sure it demonstrates characteristics of Spunk as portrayed in the story. Be prepared to read it aloud in class.
