Aminata Diallo
This character is the protagonist and narrator of the novel. Born in Bayo, Africa, in 1745, she was kidnapped at the age of eleven and sold into slavery.
Chekura
This character is a slave to the slave-traders and is from a neighboring village of the protagonist. He accompanies the slave-traders as they take the protagonist to the sea; however, he becomes trapped and sent on the ship as well. He later marries the Protagonist in the Colonies.
Chief Biton
This character is a fellow captive along with the protagonist in the journey across on the slave ship. He encourages the protagonist to learn the white man's language and stages an uprising during the voyage.
