Objective
Objective: Setting: The setting or location of any novel is often as important as the characters. So Long a Letter takes place in the country of Senegal, Africa. It is helpful to learn about the location in order to better understand this book. This lesson will look at the setting.
1. Homework. Students will research Senegal in the 1960s forward, especially in regards to government, culture, etc. and write a short paper on the setting.
2. Class discussion. Could this novel had been set anywhere? How does the Senegalese culture make this a unique story? How does the Senegalese culture differ from the students' culture? How did the setting affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?
3. Group work. In groups students will research a setting in America, where the setting might be similar (for example a rural setting) and discuss the ways in which...
