Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the relationship between Javier and his grandfather and how it changed. Javier had been afraid of his grandfather. The trip to Guatemala helped him get to know his grandfather.

Class Discussion: Why was Javier afraid of his grandfather when he was living in La Herraduro? How did Javier have to supply his grandfather with alcohol when his grandfather was drinking? What were some bad things Javier remembered about his grandfather? How would his grandfather walk him to school? How would their walks be silent? What did Javier learn about his grandfather on the trip to Guatemala? How did learning about his grandfather help him understand his grandfather and lose his fear? How was it comforting to Javier to have his grandfather with him for the first part of the trip? How did the time they spent together...
