Objective
Book 1, Part 1: In Chapter 2 of Book 1, the author compares various social hierarchies. This lesson focuses on those comparisons and the points that the author is trying to make with them.
Lesson
1. Before class, write the following phrase on the board: What is a social hierarchy? Have the students free-write their answers and discuss them with the class. Create a class definition.
2. Divide the class into small groups. Have each small group examine the family structure that the author cites in Chapter 2. What elements of the family structure fit, or do not fit, into the definition of social hierarchy? How does one move up within the hierarchy of a family? Have each small group present their answers to the class.
3. Group discussion: What point is the author trying to make by examining social hierarchies? What is the purpose? What role does a social hierarchy play in society...
