Lesson 1 (from Preface - Chapter 2: What is Racism?)
Objective
Students will meticulously analyze the many different elements of the cover art included with the work of So You Want to Talk About Race in order to deepen their understanding of the connection between the work's themes and the cover art chosen by Oluo to underscore these themes.
Visual literacy is a very important skill to foster in today's world and the vivid artwork featured on the cover of So You Want to Talk About Race provides an excellent opportunity to teach students these skills. One edition of the book surrounds the words ‘talk about race’ with a jagged interpretation of a speech bubble. Almost immediately upon beginning to read the book, Oluo introduces the idea of how crucial it is that as citizens of the United States, we begin to engage in a greater number of meaningful, honest conversations about race.
