Objective

The novel "Snow Country" introduces the protagonist while he is on the train headed towards a resort town for a visit. He is going to meet Komako, a geisha he met while on a previous trip to the resort town. As Shimamura arrives and sees Komako, he is reminded of their first meeting. A flashback sequence follows in which Shimamura shares with the reader his first encounter with Komako. This lesson discusses exposition in "Snow Country".

Lesson

1) Class discussion:

a) As a class, discuss what exposition is and what purpose it serves, especially in the novel "Snow Country".

b) Create a definition of exposition as a class, and then have students copy the definition into their notebooks.
