Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Keegan's descriptions of setting in Part I, of both New Ross and of Furlong's coal yard. Keegan describes New Ross as a small Irish town with some shops, manufacturing, and agriculture, where residents all know each other and each other's business. The coal yard is a busy business that deals in timber, gas, coal, and other sources of energy, and it is the source of Furlong's financial security and the fruit of his labor.
