Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze the significance of Jean's job to both her and her family. In Part I, Chambers establishes that Jean is a journalist for the North Kent Echo, a daily community newspaper, in the 1950s. It is unusual in this time and place for a woman to be a full-time wage earner, and Jean is among the few women employed at the paper. The job is a source of financial security, pride, and meaning for Jean.
