The objective of this lesson is to discuss what England symbolizes to Hortense, and why it does not meet her expectations. Hortense has dreamed of going to England. When she gets there, it does not meet her expectations.

Class Discussion: How does Hortense decide that England is her destiny? What does she envision she will have in England on page 83? How does she think she and Gilbert will live? How does she imagine the neighbors will treat her? What does England symbolize to her? What does Hortense find when she arrives in England? How is her new home different from what she imagined? Why does England not meet her expectations?
