Lesson 1 (from Part I ("The Church of Abundant Life" - "First Language," Pages 1 - 56))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Choi's depictions of the arc of an immigrant's life in America through the experiences of Soo in "The Church of Abundant Life." When Soo first comes to America from Korea, she is a young bride who has not seen her husband Jae in several years. Soo is excited about starting her new life with Jae in this new country, but by the end of her first night in America, she has a starkly different - and disappointing - sense of what might be ahead for her. Soo eventually evolves from disappointment to resignation after several decades of living in America, suffering miscarriages, helping to run hers and Jae's shop, and trying not to think too much about what might have been.
