Objective

Objective: Part 1. This section of the play is set in the photography shop owned by a young black man named Styles. The objective of this lesson is to use details of the opening scene and setting to make deductions about what the play might be about, and why.

1. Opening discussion: What details about the opening scene can we use to get a feel for what this play is about? Where/when does it takes place? How do we know?

2. Activity: Have students get into groups of three and list factors that could provide hints regarding what this play may be about on one side of a page, and on the other, their ideas about what topics might take the spotlight in future scenes. Students can present their thoughts to the class after sufficient work time is given.
