• This book is written in the past tense and from the third person point of view.
• In Chapter 1: Joost. A servant boy named Joost was employed at a wealthy Merchant's house in Ketterdam, a fictional city.
• Joost worked for Councilman Hoede. Hoede employed people known as Grisha, who could manipulate materials, people's emotions, people's physical functions, and people's appearances with magical capabilities.
• Joost was besotted with a Grisha named Anya and was looking for her, when someone told him that Anya had been taken away recently along with another Grisha named Yuri.
• Joost went to look for Anya and found her with Hoede and some guards, as well as a young boy, in an enclosed boathouse with high glass windows.
