Carrie and Mr. Drouet both get their first impression of each other in these chapters. The object of this lesson will be to discuss the importance of first impressions, and to discuss how these two impressions could affect the outcome of the book.
Lesson
1) Read aloud with the class the part where Carrie first walks on the train and Drouet notices her. Have the students all write their own first impressions of Carrie based on this description. Allow some volunteers to read their work.
2) Read aloud with the class the part where Carrie talks about her first impression of Drouet. Discuss this with the class. Why does she feel this way? Is this the same impression you have of him? Do you think this image will change? Why or why not? What does this opinion say about Drouet himself?
