Objective
Students will become familiar with the cultural and historical context of "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."
[Note: Because referring to first section of the sermon, the scriptural text, as "Text" within these lessons might cause confusion with the literary term "text," in these lessons the first section of the sermon will be referred to as its "introduction."]
Edwards' sermon is not particularly compelling reading without context. Even students raised in the Christian tradition are unlikely to have enough preexisting knowledge to effectively read this text. This lesson provides the necessary background information for students to appreciate the literary art of Edwards' work.
