• Edwards begins with a quote from Deuteronomy: "'Their foot shall slide in due time.' Deuteronomy 32:35" (405). This quote is the text for the sermon that will follow.
• The introductory section that follows is an explication of this text.
• Edwards first offers context: the passage refers to the Israelites. Despite being God's chosen people and being offered blessings from God, they persisted in their errors.
• Punishment and destruction, Edwards explains, followed from these errors.
