· The house they live in, Pop built narrow and long and close to the road leaving the property behind wooded.

· His pigpen, goat yard, and chicken coop are in small clearings in the trees.

· As they walk, Jojo remembers getting whipped when he was six for running around the pen barefoot.

· Pop told him he could get worms and then later told Jojo how he and his sisters and brothers played barefoot and got worms.
