Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel. Paulette Jiles is an American poet and novelist. Her 2016 novel News of the World was shortlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of Simon the Fiddler? How was the book received? What else has the author written?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask them to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to include information relevant to the book's themes. Regroup and share with the class.
Individual Activity: Choose one fact about the author that you think is most important to understand in reading the novel. Describe how you think that fact will impact the characters, themes, or narrative structure.
Homework: Read Chapters 1 - 3.
