Lesson 1 (from Act One, pages 1-12)
Objective
This lesson will discuss the dynamics of the relationship between Benare and Samant. Benare is the central figure in the play, around whom the plot hinges. Samant is also important as a unique character in the play, as he turns out to be the only one who is remotely sympathetic to Benare.
Lesson
Group Discussion: Have two students read the parts of Benare and Samant, respectively, from pages one to three through the Samant’s line about “hypnotism” at the bottom of page three (3). Have another student read all (italicized) stage directions. What does Benare mean when she says she feels “marvellous” and “wonderful” (1)? Why does she compliment Samant, stand closely to him, and ask about his wife? How does Samant respond to her advances?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups. Have each group compare and contrast Benare and Samant’s respective behaviors...
