• The play opens on an empty meeting hall with old furniture in it and a broken clock, portraits of national leaders, and the image of the god Ganesha on the wall.
• Samant enters and invites in Benare.
• Samant is carrying a lock and key, a green toy parrot, and a book.
• Benare is sucking her finger, and Samant asks her if she caught it in the lock.
• Benare dismisses his concern, saying that she feels “marvellous” and “wonderful” (1).
• Benare mentions the “others” (1) with whom she arrived at the station and who have fallen behind.
• Benare tells Samant she likes him twice and that he’s “nice” and a “very pure and good person” (2) and inquires about his wife...
