1. Teacher lecture centers on James Clavell as a modern novelist with some detail as to his style and narrative abilities.
2. Teacher leads discussion on cultural differences that are an important theme of the novel.
3. Teacher selects sections from the first six chapters to read in class to highlight the Catholic-Protestant differences and the Japanese-barbarian conflict.
4. From the chapters, point out similarities and differences in social rank between the ship culture and the Japanese society.
