1. Who is Johor, and what is his job?

Johor is the first character to be introduced. He is a Canopean emissary, charged with maintaining order on the planets and Canopean colonies he oversees, one of which is Shikasta.

2. What is the main Canopean ideology?

In general, Canopean society is ruled by love and compassion. There is little tension or conflict.

3. How is Shikasta described at the beginning of the novel?

Shikasta is a chaotic planet, and one of Johor's worst experiences. Its very nature results in conflict, and all forms of life prey on all others.

4. How are the shells of Shikasta organized?

Shikasta is comprised of six concentric shells. The outermost shell, also called Zone Six, is the one that concerns all of human history. There is another zone outside Zone Six where lost souls exist, waiting to reincarnate, and they are generally miserable there.
