Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 - 5)
Objective
Johor notes in Chapter 1 that the rule of Canopus is Love. The objective of this lesson is to discuss how this makes Canopus different from chaotic Shikasta.
Lesson
1) In-class writing assignment. In one to two paragraphs, have students answer the following questions: How does Johor describe Canopus, in Chapter 1? Generally speaking, what is the guiding principle of life there?
2) In-class group work. Divide students into groups of 3 or 4, and have them discuss the following questions: How does Johor describe Shikasta? What was his experience there like? Why?
3) In-class discussion. As a class, have students discuss the work they did in groups. In addition, have them discuss the following questions: Why is Shikasta so chaotic? If Shikasta isn't ruled by Love, what is it ruled by, and why? How would the inhabitants' lives change if it were ruled by Love? Why?
4) Homework: Read Chapters 2 and 3.
