Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 60))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the reasons behind Gbessa's village shunning herself and her family, and to explore Gbessa's reaction to her treatment. Gbessa has the misfortune to be born on a day when a village elder, Ol' Ma Nyanpoo, dies when the roof of her house falls in, which the villagers in Lai believe is due to the revenge of a cat's spirit that Nyanpoo killed earlier. Gbessa is thought to be cursed because of the coincidence of her birth with this inauspicious event. Gbessa, as a child, feels the unfairness and humiliation of her fate, but she comes to accept it - until the day when she decides to travel back to the village and prove she has survived her exile, which was meant to kill her.
