• Gbessa was a young Vai woman from the village of Lai in Africa who was believed by her own people to be cursed due to the circumstances of her birth around the early 1830s.

• In Gbessa's village, cats were sacred, and one of the village elders, a woman named Ol' Ma Nyanpoo, had killed her cat one day.

• In revent, the cat's spirit was said to have sat on the roof of Ol' Ma Nyanpoo's house and brought the roof down on the old woman, killing her.
