Objective

Falling in Love

Poetry is a major symbol in this book not just because it is a collection of poems, but also because poetry was such a main focus for Caroline Kennedy in her life. The objective of this lesson will be to discuss why poetry is so powerful to her and why she was so drawn to expressing herself in this way.

Lesson

1) Personal Response to Text: Place on each student's desk a different poem from this first section of the book. When the students come in to class, have them read their poem and write a response to the poem they found. Allow each student to read their poem aloud and read the response they wrote to it. Discuss this with the class. How did this poetry make you feel? What different styles were there? Which one do you like best? Why?
