At the beginning of the novel, Sharpe is trying to negotiate furniture prices with an Indian man called Nana. Sharpe needs furniture to furnish his room aboard the ship, which will have nothing for him but a bed. Nana tries to persuade Sharpe to give him more than he needs, but Sharpe makes sure Nana does not take him for a ride.
2. How does Sharpe save Captain Chase and his men?
Sharpe is hiding in the bushed, watching Nana's man overrun Chase and his soldiers. He hides through the entire fight, but when someone puts a gun against Chase's temple, he draws his own pistol and orders the man to drop it. The man has no choice to obey and as soon as everything calms down, Sharpe and Chase begin to negotiate a deal to get back their money.
