Chapter 1:

- The novel begins on a chilly May 12 in Chicago.

- The story is narrated by the protagonist Camille Preaker, a reporter for the Daily Post.

- The Daily Post is the fourth largest newspaper in Chicago.

- The story opens with Camille having a conversation between herself and her editor, Frank Curry.

- In this opening scene, Camille is preoccupied with a thumbtack that Curry has taken from her. (This obsession with sharp objects will be important later on in the novel.)

- In Curry's office, Curry asks Camille to tell him about Wind Gap.
