A London orphan and minor witch, this character comes into service of the protagonist and becomes heavily associated with Jack. She takes on the role of mentee in some matters, allowing for exposition.
Christopher “Kit” Marlowe
Author of Doctor Faustus and Edward II, among others, this character is a daemon ostensibly a friend to Matthew. He is, in fact, in the service of Father Hubbard, and he is openly antagonistic towards the protagonist.
Diana Bishop
The protagonist, this character carries out the bulk of the narration in the novel. A weaver—a rare and powerful type of witch—and a time-traveler, she is an Ivy League professor in her native present and adopts, with some justification, the role of a nobleman’s wife in the early modern setting of most of the novel.
