The stark deserts of Pakistan are more than just a backdrop for the story of Shabanu. This lesson focuses on the importance of setting to the plot and themes of the novel.

Lesson

1. Discuss as a class the elements of the setting introduced in this chapter. What is the landscape like? What role do each of these play in the daily lives of the characters: dry sand, huts with thatched roofs, cooking fires outside, camels, water holes and wells, and monsoons?

2. Break into small groups to discuss other elements of setting. What do the characters eat? What do they wear? How are their food, drink, and clothing dictated by the landscape or culture? What do you think the nomadic desert life that Shabanu and her family live is like?
