Objective
In this lesson, the students will research the author’s background.
Ling Ma worked as a journalist and editor before becoming a novelist. The students will research the author and determine how her past education and experiences have influenced her writing.

Class Discussion: What seems to be the author’s goal in writing this book? Is an author’s history always important? Does it depend on the genre of writing? Why or why not?
Individual Activity: Based on the author’s biography, what connections can be made between her life and this story? Where was she born and where has she lived? Where do the characters travel?
Partner Activity: Work with a partner to come up with a list of 20 interview questions. Include questions about the author’s past that may lend insight to this story. Examples: education, work experience, influences, and awards.
