• In 2019, 32-year-old Eva Mercy nearly choked to death on a piece of gum. 


• She had been trying to masturbate when the gum lodged in her throat. 


• She eventually coughed up the gum, slipped on her ancient cameo ring, and went to wake up her daughter Audre for her best friend’s birthday party. 


• Eva was a good mom and a capable novelist, but her real talent was her ability to push weird things aside and get on with life. 


• When she was little, her mom used to tell her that Creole women see signs; it was not until middle school Eva realized that her mother was eccentric and curated signs to justify her whims.
