Objective

Objective: SERGEANT MUSGRAVE'S DANCE is a play written in 1959 by John Arden. The aim of this lesson is to introduce the play.

1. Class discussion. Have the students heard of the play before? What do the students expect from the book? Why do they expect these things to happen?

2. Brainstorm John Arden's past works with the students. Do his books share similar themes? Divide the students into pairs and assign them each a book to research. On their return, discuss what the students expect from SERGEANT MUSGRAVE'S DANCE?

3. With the students look at the questions that Arden asks in the opening chapter of the novel. Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down five questions Arden poses in the opening chapter.
