Lesson 1 (from Author's Note, Prologue, and Part One, Chapters 1 - 2)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book Separated: Inside an American Tragedy. After researching the author, students will read and analyze the opening sections: “Family Separation and Reunification: Timeline of Key Events” and Author’s Note: Facts on the Ground.” Students will further discuss their perceptions of United States immigration policy in the past and present and examine expectations from the reading.

Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on author and journalist Jacob Soboroff and the publication of Separated: Inside an American Tragedy. For what news organizations is Soboroff a regular contributor? What original news stories led to the publication of this book?
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read “Family Separation and Reunification: Timeline of Key Events” and Author’s Note: Facts on the Ground.” As a group, discuss the author’s perspectives as he begins...
