Objective

Chapters 1 and 2

In these chapters, the protagonist travels by boat to his hometown of Nogent in the year 1840. On the ship, he meets a couple traveling in first class that will become important to the plot of the novel upon his return to Paris. The narrator describes daily life in Nogent, thus giving insight into the protagonist's background. The objective of this lesson is a study of the setting.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: What is setting? What elements are included in setting? Where is this novel set? When does the action take place? Why is the setting significant?

2) Group Discussion: In groups, have the students discuss the setting of Chapter 1 with a focus on the ship Ville de Montereau and ask one student to record the ideas. What is the setting like? How are the passengers divided? How does setting relate to the theme of social class...
