Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

The tone of the novel is biting social commentary masked in humor that is often sarcastic, with occasional serious moments or scenes. How would the novel be different if it was written in a solely serious tone? When writing your response, consider how character development, plot events, and reader reception would be affected by a change in the novel's tone.

Essay Topic 2

The word "hypocrisy" is not reserved for talking about religion, though that is one of its most frequent usages. Do you think that any characters could be called hypocritical? Defend your response.

Essay Topic 3

Most novels have a variety of character types, such as round, flat, static, dynamic and sympathetic. Choose two of these character types and select one character from the novel for each that you feel is the perfect example for the types. Explain your reasons, using quotes from the novel, why you believe these characters are the perfect examples of those character types.
