The Selected Political Speeches of Cicero is a collection of Cicero's writings that were meant to be read out loud, although some were distributed as reading material instead. This lesson is about Cicero's career in politics, what motivated him to write his speeches, and how they were written.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: What was Cicero known for throughout his life? Why was it important that he was recognized as a writer as well as an orator? In what way did Cicero combine his two abilities effectively in his career? Does the class think that Cicero had an advantage in having the ability to write his own speeches? Why or why not?

2) Writing and Analysis: Have the class take 15 minutes and write down three things that Cicero was trying to accomplish with his speeches. Afterward, talk about the answers and whether or not...
