Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel.
Joan Silber is the author of The Secrets of Happiness. She is a novelist and short story writer, who has previously taught at New York University and teaches at Sarah Lawrence College, her alma mater, in New York. Much of her work explores themes of happiness, motherhood, and family, and all characters in The Secrets of Happiness question and challenge what it means to find happiness in the complexity of the modern world. The objective of this lesson is to explore how Silber's background and work shape the story, characters, and conflicts reader face in the early chapters of the novel.
