The narrator is speaking to someone named Jeffers. She tells him that she “met the devil on a train leaving Paris” (3), which began a years’ long series of negative events.

2. How does the narrator describe the man she met on the train in Paris? What was he doing? Why did she not say something?

The man on the train is described as “yellow and bloated with bloodshot bile coloured eyes, and...dirty teeth” (4). He sat fondling a very young girl who sat on his lap. The narrator does not say anything to the man because at that moment she wants someone else to and does not want to feel it is her responsibility.
