• The narrator is standing by the window of their family’s small apartment in Queens, watching as their parents leave for their jobs.
• At the entrance of the subway station, Amy holds her breath, waiting for Pa to touch Ma’s cheek, or for Ma to burst into tears, for either of them “to give some small sign of the truth of their relationship,” but Ma waves awkwardly instead, before heading down the street to her job at the local dry cleaners (8).
• Grandma, Ma’s mother, died a week ago in Amsterdam, where she lived with the Tan family.
• In the Tan family are Ma’s cousin, Helena, Helena’s husband...
