· Following the dedication, the novel opens with Chapter 1, Edwin St. John St. Andrew crossing the Atlantic from England to Canada, looking ahead and contemplating the effective exile into which he has been sent.
· Edwin’s ancestry is glossed, along with some of his personal history, and his intended profession is noted.
· Chapter 2 begins with Edwin taking lodgings and lingering in Halifax, asserting that he is “just trying to puzzle out my next move” (5).
· Edwin contemplates possible career paths as he remains, dilatory, in Halifax, and attempts abortive entries into several.
· After six months, Reginald joins Edwin, laying out his plans and arranging to bring Edwin along with him.
