• In Chapter 1, Deeti, sees a vision of a tall-masted ship on the ocean.

• She grows poppies, and her vision occurs at the end of winter when the poppies have been slow to shed their petals.
• She rises early and lays out clothes and food for her husband, who works at the opium factory.
• The factory is only three miles away, but Hukam Singh cannot walk because he was wounded in the leg when he served as a sepoy in British regiment.
• Deeti’s six-year-old daughter Kabutri is sleeping.
• Deeti decides to let her sleep, since the girl will be married in three or four years and will have enough...
