Objective
In this lesson, the students will research the history and background of the author.
Neal Shusterman is a screenplay writer and New York Times bestselling author. He has written dozens of award-winning books for all ages.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Do you think fiction writers invent their material or use their lives as inspiration? Which genres does Shusterman write in? Has he written other trilogies?
Journal Activity: Hypothesize what you think Shusterman’s politics may be. Consider the politics, power struggles, and values of the characters in the book and how the writer portrays them.
Partner Activity: Work with a partner to compose 15 in-depth interview questions for Shusterman. Include questions about the author’s youth and when he started writing, where he was educated and what he studied, and which awards he has won. Exchange with another group and research and answer their questions.
