Objective: Chapter 1 Denver In this chapter, we meet Denver, who was a young black man working the plantations in Red River Parish. Walking one day, Denver encountered a white woman with car trouble and offered his assistance. Three white boys on horseback saw Denver with the white woman and accused him of harassing her. The boys decided to teach Denver a lesson and he was nearly killed when they roped him and attempted to drag him behind them. This lesson will focus on the issue of discrimination in this book.
