Colson Whitehead has become one of the most critically acclaimed novelists. The objective of this lesson is to learn more about Colson Whitehead as the author of "Sag Harbor" as well as why it is important to know about the author of a text.

Lesson

1) Focusing Exercise: Have students write for 5 minutes in response to the following prompt: "Why is knowing information about the author important when reading a text?" Collect their responses.

2) Class Lecture: Lecture the class for 5-10 minutes with some information about Colson Whitehead. Who is he? What is he known for? What is his life like? What is his academic background (graduated from Harvard, etc.)? What did he do before he became a famous novelist? What were his own childhood summers like (e.g., very similar to those portrayed in "Sag Harbor")? What has happened over the years in regard...
