Lesson 1 (from Book 1, Part 1)

Objective

In Book 1, Part 1, the reader begins to get a feel for Sabbath's deep-seated hatred of women. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the ways in which Sabbath's feelings for women are shown in Part 1.

Lesson

1) In-class writing assignment: In one to two paragraphs, have students answer the following question: How does Sabbath feel about women? What clues does the reader get about his attitudes toward women in Part 1?

2) In-class group work: Divide class into groups of 3 or 4 students, and ask them to discuss the following question(s): Based on the information given in Part 1, why is Sabbath so bitter and angry toward women? What can you cite from the text to support your theory?

3) In-class discussion: As a class, ask students to discuss the work that they did in groups. In addition, ask them to discuss the following questions: How does the author reveal...
