Fanny Fern was a popular American writer in the nineteenth century. Fern (whose real name was Sara Willis Parton) wrote newspaper columns, novels and children's stories. Fern was the first American woman to have her own regular newspaper column. This lesson discusses the author of the novel "Ruth Hall", Fanny Fern.

Lesson

1) Library Research: Have the students research the author of the novel, Fanny Fern. Explore the other works she has written, as well as her personal background. Take a look at interviews and biographical information to gain insight into her writing and where "Ruth Hall" fits in with her other work.

2) Presentation: Have students get into pairs and prepare a presentation, using their research on Fern and her canon. Have each group read an excerpt from different pieces written by Fern during their presentation. At the end of the presentations, have...
