Bayonet

This object symbolizes brutal sexual violence intended to kill or maim. When Christian first brings his niece Sophie in hopes of convincing Mama to take her in, he finally admits to Mama that Sophie is 'ruined,' meaning that she is no longer capable of having sex. He explains that a soldier had raped her with the use of this object, thereby inflicting a great deal of internal damage.

Raw Diamond

This object symbolizes an insurance policy against future times of struggle. Mama shows this object to Sophie while highlighting the merits of weathering the storm, rather than running in from the rain. Mama keeps this object under lock and key, but when she willingly gives it to Mr. Harari at the end of the play, she has no way of knowing that she will lose it forever.
