Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1- Chapter 4)
Objective
The objective of today's lesson is for students to research the author Bushra Rehman. Students will examine how Rehman's life might be reflected in the story. Students will examine how their knowledge of Rehman's background might affect how they read the story.
Bushra Rehman grew up in the 1980s in Corona, Queens, New York. She grew up in a closely linked Muslim neighborhood. She is also a lesbian. Roses, in the Mouth of a Lion, is based on Bushra's real-life experiences. Much of what the main character experiences closely resembles what Bushra Rehman experienced herself as a young woman. Bushra writes stories and lectures about what it means to be a woman and a Muslim-American. Her stories also revolve around inherited culture and tradition, and the difficulties a person faces when their truest self clashes with their cultural traditions.
