Because the book is an autobiography, it is told from the first person point of view. The objective of this lesson is to understand point of view.

Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion of point of view in literature. Begin with a definition and a clarification of the different perspectives. What can the students observe about the point of view in this book? Can they distinguish why this point of view is so obvious? Can the point of view be anything other than first person point of view since it is Richard telling his own story? Why is the point of view narrative and not omniscient? Have them point out some examples of the first person narrative perspective and share with the class.
